Designs were prepared in accordance with WSDOT technical specifications and the WSDOT LRFD Bridge Design Manual. CivilTech additionally provided temporary shoring. CivilTech provided structural engineering design for approximately 15 retaining walls, noise walls, moment slabs/copings on MSE walls, maintenance access doors in retaining walls, sign structures, and other miscellaneous structures. Wall types included MSE, concrete cantilevered, solider pile, and tie back soldier pile walls. CivilTech also assisted with development of Project Standard Plans for retaining walls, noise walls, and traffic barriers that could be used repeatedly throughout the project corridor. Our engineers attended meetings with designers and contractors to resolve design issues and conflicts between disciplines. CivilTech additionally provided temporary shoring designs to assist the contractor with construction of permanent facilities. CivilTech designed a shoring system to support construction of a southbound bridge at Broadway.

The shoring system included a soldier pile wall with multiple-levels of tiebacks to support two-phased construction. For the first phase of construction, the wall was designed to provide lateral support of I-5 so the new bridge could be constructed adjacent to I-5. For the second phase of construction, traffic was moved onto the new bridge so that the old bridge could be demolished.

Other shoring tasks included designs of soldier pile, ecology block, and tangent pile walls for Pacific Bridge, Broadway Flyover, Hewitt Avenue piers, Bridges 533/633, Bridge 5/640, Bridge 5/628, and multiple retaining walls. CivilTech also provided assistance with evaluating damaged tiebacks and designing lagging support, wedge plates, and pipe supports.
