(If you'd rather hire a professional, ) Most indie publishing experts will warn you against making your own book cover, with good reason: the cover design is too crucial an element to self-publishing success to take lightly. Making your book a bestseller is hard enough without an ugly cover sabotaging your efforts. As a general rule, you don’t want to increase the resolution (or size) of your images. Always try to work with a larger resolution image so you adjust down rather than up. This will make them look crisper and sharper. Screen captures will only be at the display’s as the monitor’s resolution, so they are usually not suitable for print, unless at a very small size.
